August 3, 2012. Harrisburg Mayor Linda Thompson shut down the 500 block of Curtin Street in an attempt to curb the high crime in that area. Across the street from the blockaded street sat Green Urban Initiative's N6th Street Garden, which was bulldozed on September 26th at the insistence of residents who declared the garden overgrown, untended, and a haven for criminal activity.

A glance of the garden on August 3rd shows brightly painted boxes and a lot devoid of trash and high weeds, unlike the lot located across the garden on the corner, neglected and littered.---Tara Leo Auchey
